Wallace Adams Binns

SYLVESTER — Mr. Wallace Adams Binns, SR, 80, of Sylvester, died Thursday May 15, 2008 at his residence.

Mr. Binns requested his body be donated for science therefore it has been sent to the Medical College of Georgia.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday May 24, 2008 at 4:00 PM overlooking the lake at the Binn’s home, 1749 Spring Flats Road, Sylvester, GA.

Mr. Binns was born in Thomasville, GA on July, 23, 1927 and moved to Albany at an early age and attended the Dougherty County Public School System. After graduating from Albany High School in 1944, he attended The Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, SC. Upon completion he received an appointment to West Point. Mr. Binns chose to leave West Point after a short time to enlist in the Army and serve his country during WWII. With an honorable discharge, he left the Army to continue his education.

A graduate from the University of Georgia in 1949 and a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, he received a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and became a self-employed Consulting Forrester. Mr. Binns was a successful commercial and residential real estate investor. Mr. Binns was always interested in anything educational and outdoors. He joined the Boy Scouts of America at an early age and attained the rank of Eagle Scout by the age of fifteen and was a member of the Order of the Arrows. He continued to enjoy scouting throughout his college years by serving as a Scout Leader at the University of Georgia and was a member of Troop One of the Chehaw Council in Albany. In 1972, Mr. Binns was presented with a Special Support Award, 1974 Top Ten Award and the Good Turn Award in 1976.

He was a member of the Red Cross and enjoyed teaching numerous first aide classes. In 1969, Mr. Binns became an active member of the United States Power Squadrons; safe boating educational organization. He completed all the classes that were offered receiving a full certificate in navigation. Mr. Binns served as a teacher and held every office available in the local group and went on to serve as Commander of District 22 in Georgia and Florida. He held a Life Membership Award and was presented with 28 Merit Mark Awards. He especially enjoyed sailing with his family for many years, which allowed him to use his knowledge of navigating.

Mr. Binns was also a Life Member of the American Legion Post 30 and V.F.W. Post 2785. He was a member of the Elks Club Lodge 713 and a Legionnaire and a member of the Albany Moose Lodge 1285. He had recently joined the Sons of Confederate Veterans Army of Tennessee, Georgia Division. During his illness he was taking an advanced Calculus and Spanish class on his computer.

Mr. Binns attended Pinson Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mr. Binns is survived by his wife of 38 years, Georgia Farris Binns and his children. 3 sons, Wallace A. Binns JR. and his wife Mary of Albany, GA, William H. Binns and his wife Liz of Frisco, TX, Charles L. Binns and his wife Allison of Sylvester; 3 daughters, Donna J. Jones of Richmond Hill, GA, Deadra A. Dooly and her husband Richard of Jacksonville, FL, Denise L. Hearon and her husband Robert of Baconton, GA; 15 grandchildren, Carri Ayne Jones, Braxton T. Jones, Coby Royal, Nena Graham and her husband Matthew, William H. Binns, JR. Mary Fortune Binns, John C. Binns, Richard A. Dooly, IV, Britain LeAnna Dooly, Garrison D. Dykes, Flynt A. Dykes, Callie Marie Binns, Edward Short and his wife Bethany, Tinsley Short and Bob Hearon.

Mr. Binns was preceded in death by his parents Henry Hillyer and Willie Carey Adams Binns, brothers, William Henry Binns and Hillyer Henry Binns.

The family will receive friends following the celebration service.

Richard W. Ely

ALBANY — Richard W. Ely, 71, of Leesburg passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted today, May 22, 2008 at 6 P.M. in the chapel of Hall & Hall Funeral Home. Dr. William H. Sims III will officiate and cremation will follow the service.

Richard W. Ely was born January 29, 1937 in Belle Glade, FL. to the late Charles and Edna Freeman Ely. Mr. Ely was a successful entrepreneur having owned a Texaco Service Station, Ely’s Auto Parts and Deutz Tractor Dealership all in Belle Glade, FL; he also owned Pedro Grocery Store in Ocala, FL. before moving to Albany in 1987. He came to Albany to work for Rallye Mazda as General Manager. Later on he owned his own green house business called the Thundering Springs Foliage which was destroyed along with his home in the flood of 1994. Richard W. Ely was a licensed boat Captain, Airplane Pilot and enjoyed fishing and was an avid race fan and driver.

Other than his parents his sister, Maria, preceded Mr. Ely in death.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Evelyn Buchard Ely of Leesburg; two children and their spouses, Richard W. Ely II and his wife, Christine of Leesburg and Julie Sutphin and her husband, David of Winter Park, FL; two brothers and one-sister-in-law, Gary Ely of Brooksville, FL. and Wayne Tryon and his wife, Linda of Apopka, FL.; three sisters, Patty Albritton of Okeechobee, FL., Barbara Caruthers and her husband Ray of Georgia and Mary Able and her husband, Mike of North Carolina; and four grandchildren, Richard III, Carle, Rhett and Steele.

Visitation will be today from 4 P.M. until the funeral hour at 6 P.M. in the chapel of Hall & Hall Funeral Home.

Betty Ann Barrett McCard

ALBANY — Mrs. Betty Ann Barrett McCard left this world to join her Heavenly father on Friday, May 16th 2008. She lived her life according to her strong faith in Our Lord Jesus. As a professional estate liquidator and appraiser for 35 years, she used that faith to help and encourage the many troubled ones she encountered along the way. At her request, a private graveside service was held at Crown Hill Cemetery on May 19, 2008, Rev. Roy Cook presiding, with selected hymnals on solo violin by Victoria Anne McKinney. Betty is survived by husband James Duval, sons Jim and Mike, and one brother, Benjamin Allen Barret. David William Moorehead

ALBANY — The graveside funeral service of David (Dave) William Moorehead, 67, of 2331 Greenleaf Lane, Albany, GA who died Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at his residence, will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Andersonville National Cemetery. Rev. Bobby Moye will officiate.

A native of Bryan, Ohio, Mr. Moorehead had resided in Albany for the past thirty-eight years moving from Warner Robins, GA. He was a greeter at Wal-Mart, was an Air Force Veteran and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Carmen Moorehead of Albany, two daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Jeff Horton of Clyo, GA and Susan and Ronnie Johnson of Americus, GA, a sister and her husband, Joan and Max Bowers of La Grande, OR. and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Mathews Funeral Home.
