Wallace Adams Binns

SYLVESTER – Mr. Wallace Adams Binns, SR, 80, of Sylvester, died Thursday May 15, 2008 at his residence.

Mr. Binns requested his body be donated for science therefore it has been sent to the Medical College of Georgia.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday May 24, 2008 at 4 p.m. overlooking the lake at the Binns' home, 1749 Spring Flats Road, Sylvester, GA.

Mr. Binns was born in Thomasville GA on July 23, 1927 and moved to Albany at an early age and attended the Dougherty County Public School System. After graduating from Albany High School in 1944, he attended The Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, SC. Upon completion he received an appointment to WEst Point. Mr. Binns chose to leave West Point after a short time to enlist in the Army and serve his country during WWII. With an honorable discharge, he left the Army to continue his education.

A graduate from the University of Georgia in 1949 and a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, he received a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and became a self-employed Consulting Forester. Mr. Binns was a successful commercial and residential real estate investor. Mr. Binns was always interested in anything educational and outdoors. He joined the Boy Scouts of America at an early age and attained the rank of Eagle Scout by the age of fifteen and was a member of the Order of the Arrows. He continued to enjoy scouting throughout his college years by serving as a Scout Leader at the University of Georgia and was a member of Troop One of the Chehaw Council in Albany. In 1972, Mr. Binns was presented with a Special Support Award, 1974 Top Ten Award and the Good Turn Award in 1976.

He was a member of the Red Cross and enjoyed teaching numerous first aide classes. In 1969, Mr. Binns became an active member of the United States Power Squadrons; safe boating educational organization. He completed all the classes that were offered, receiving a full certificate in navigation. Mr. Binns served as a teacher and held every office available in the local group and went on to serve as Commander of District 22 in Georgia and Florida. He held a Life Membership Award and was presented with 28 Merit Mark Awards. He especially enjoyed sailing with is family for many years, which allowed him to use his knowledge of navigating.

Mr. Binns was also a Life Member of the American Legion Post 30 and VFW Post 2785. He was a member of the Elks Club Lodge 713 and a Legionnaire and a member of the Albany Moose Lodge 1285. He had recently joined the Sons of Confederate Veterans Army of Tennessee, Georgia Division. During his illness, he was taking an advanced Calculus and Spanish class on his computer.

Mr. Binns attended Pinson Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mr. Binns is survived by his wife of 38 years, Georgia Farris Binns and his children. 3 sons, Wallace A. Binns JR. and his wife Mary of Albany GA, William H. Binns and his wife Liz of Frisco, TX, Charles L. Binns and his wife Allison of Sylvester; 3 daughters, Donna J. Jones of Richmond Hill, GA, Deandra A. Dooly and her husband Richard of Jacksonville, FL, Denise L. Hearon and her husband Robert of Baconton, GA; 15 grandchildren, Carrie Ayne Jones, Braxton T. Jones, Coby Royal, Nena Graham and her husband Matthew, William H. Binns, JR. Mary Fortune Binns, John C. Binns, Richard A. Dooly, IV, Britain LeAnna Dooly, Garrison D. Dykes, Flynt A. Dykes, Callie Marie Binns, Edward Short and his wife Bethany, Tinsley Short and Bob Hearon.

Mr. Binns was preceded in death by his parents Henry Hillyer and Willie Carey Adams Binns, brothers, William Henry Binns and Hillyer Henry Binns.

The family will receive friends following the celebration service.

ALBANY – Douglas Edwards of Georgetown, formerly of Albany, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee AL. His funeral arrangements will be announced.

Roy Hall

ALBANY – Mr. Roy Hall, 82, of 440 Wadkins Ave., Albany died May 17, 2008 at Palmyra Medical Center. Funeral services will be Saturday 3 p.m. at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with interment in Floral Memory Gardens. Rev. Jackson Johnson will officiate.

Mr. Hall was born January 5, 1926 in Baker Co. He attended Baker Co. PUblic Schools. He was retired from the Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany after 31 years. He was the President of the Usher Board at Chapel Hill Baptist.

He leaves behind two sons, Victor Roy Hall (Kimberly), Aliso Viejo, CA and Jim Hall, Baltimore, MD, two daughters, Evelyn Hall Robinson and Virginia Diane Jenkins both of Albany. Seven grandchildren; Melvin Robinson, Jr., Monica Wright (Stephen, Darrell Robinson, Damion Jenkins (Kimesha), Crystal King (Lyman), Cynthia Robinson and Trenton Hall (Samantha); 13 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Robert Davis Virginia), Albany, Jessie L. Hall (Carrie), Willie E. Hall and Tom Drae Hall (Thelma) and Norman Hall all of Newton, four sisters, Ezell Davis, Albany, Gloria Bynes, Newton, Daisy Hall-Thomas, Albany and Ilene Farley (Darryl), Stone Mountain, deceased siblings, Lee Hall, Walter M. Hall, Jr. and Ruby Hall-Bell, four god children Kristoffer Davis, Velma Greene (Peter) and Johnny Whitaker (Rita); one god-sister, Ella Wee White; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives whom he loved dearly.

The family of Mr. Hall will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home Friday evening 7-8 p.m.

The remains of Mr. Hall will be in the church on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the funeral hour.

DAWSON – Gladys Ruth Johnson, 87, of 407 College St., Dawson, died May 15, 2008 at Palmyra Medical Center. Funeral services will be Saturday 11 a.m. at St. Matthew C.M.E. Church with interment in Sardis Cemetery.

J.T. Norman

ALBANY – The memorial service for J.T. Norman, 70, who passed away Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Mitchell County Hospital, will be conducted Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Etheridge will officiate.

A native of Grady County, GA, Mr. Norman had resided in Baconton, GA since 2007, moving from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where he lived for 50 years. He was a partner at J & S Contractors in Fort Lauderdale until his retirement and was a member of The Moose Lodge #1285, here in Albany as well as a member of The Eagles Lodge in Fort Lauderdale, FL and was of the Baptist faith.

He was the last surviving child of his parents, Abe and Tance Johnson Norman, who preceded him in death. Calling him home, were his parents, along with his siblings; Curtis Norman, Junior Norman, Bernice Pittman, Hilda Hughes and Patricia Higgs.

Survivors include a loving and devoted companion, Judy Rowland of Baconton, a son, John Thomas Norman of Coral Springs, FL and many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly. Mr. Norman is also survived by a dearly loved friend and business partner, Gerald Fitzgerald and his Eagles and Moose Lodge families.

The family will be at the residence of Kay and Bill Hancock, 10334 Woodpecker Rd., Baconton, GA.
