Westover out of postseason

SOUTH EFFINGHAM -The opening round of the Class AAA state baseball tournament got under way Friday night in South Guyton between Westover and South Effingham County as the the Patriots lost Game 1, 11-7, then fell, 16-5, in Game 2.

With a hot start, the Patriots' Kerry Hall scored on a single by Jacob Riggins to get Westover going, but in the bottom of the first, the Mustangs pounded out four straight singles and ended the inning with a 3-1 lead.

The Mustangs scored two more runs in each the second, third and fourth innings until Westover stopped the bleeding in the top of the fifth as Ryan Cauley got on base with a single and Mike Schlegel cracked a two-run homer to give the Pats the lead, 4-3.

But again, the Mustangs responded, scoring eight runs from there to take a commanding 11-4 lead they would never relinquish.

Toward the end of Game 1, Westover made a slight run when C.J. Hilliard reached base on an error and Andrew Anderson hit a two-run homer. Then, Cauley hit a  single and Brandon Lee also hit a two-run homer to make it close, but not close enough.

In Game 2, Anderson hitting his second two-run homer of the night, while Lance Shernisky got into the scoring column with a first-pitch solo homer in the bottom of the second.

But the Mustangs' offense was too much, putting up 15 runs in to cap the win and end Westover's season at 19-9.
