BOYS PREP TRACK & FIELD: State Meet
Locals shine, but fail to bring home any titles

  • Westover’s boys finish tied for eighth, Lee County’s Jessy Karcher is second in two wheelchair events and Bainbridge’s 4x100 team places second at the GHSA State Meet.

JEFFERSON - The Westover High School track team, according to Patriots assistant coach Harley Calhoun, finished tied for eighth place in the GHSA meet with Elbert County at 20 points, while the biggest highlight of the day came from its 4x100 team of Camron McDuffie, Greg Green, Kenji Breelove and Rashad Greene, whom finished fifth at 42.34 seconds.

"They were in Lane 1, which is a very tough lane and they went out and did the best they could," Calhoun said. "We had to make the best of it."

Calhoun added that Green was seventh in the 100 and 200, and said he had times of 11.05 (100) and 22.24 (200). Calhoun said the 4x400 team - which was the same as the 4x100 team except for Brandon Benton instead of McDuffie - was eighth at 3:30.

"They came out and gave it all they had," Calhoun said of his entire team.

"We hoped to score more points, but we weren't able to do it. The speed was on the track at Jefferson."

Lee County's Jessy Karcher, who won state titles last year in the wheelchair 800 and 200, was second in both events to Banks County's Jay Harn this year.

Karcher's times Saturday were 2 minutes, 28.07 seconds in the 800 and 37.16 seconds in the 200. Dougherty's Steven Elliott was seventh in both the wheelchair 200 (56.77) and 800 (4:25.20) Saturday.

Monroe's team finished with 10 points, according to coach Octavia Jones.

The Tornadoes' Chris Lovett was fifth in the 110 high hurdles (14.85), and Monroe's Montravious Williams (39.38) and Sir Paul Jones (39.50) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 300 intermediate hurdles. And in the 4x400, the foursome of Jones, Lil Diamond Jones, Donquavious Hill and Lovett was fourth (3:22.49).

"We pretty much got what we expected (Saturday)," Octavia Jones said.

"Montravious and Sir Paul turned in personal-best times in the 300 intermediate hurdles so we're excited about that. Montravious had a groin injury so that makes his performance even more impressive, but we took him off the 4x100 and replaced him with Lil Diamond and he did really well."

In Class AAAA, Bainbirdge's 4x100 team (Anthony Riley, Vashawn Samuels, Chris Bush, Lavonte Russell) was second at 41.49, and Riley was fifth in the 100 (10.92). Georgia football signee Nick Williams was fourth in the 110 high hurdles (14.88) while Bruce James was sixth (14.91).

In Class AA, Mitchell County's Kyran Stewart was third in both the 100 (11.03) and 200 (22.08), and Early County's Omar Williams was sixth in the 100 (11.12).

In Class A, Calhoun County's 4x100 team of Jacorri Cannon, Ricky Haynes, Freddie King and Julius Foster was fourth (43.88), and Foster also was fourth in the 400 (50.72)
